Team Reports
Agressive New Work
The Aggressive Church Planting Team saw a few changes this past year. The first of which was the transfer of our chairman, Bob Fulkerson, to a new ministry in South Carolina. Bob had a passion for what the ACPT could do and gave many hours of his time organizing special events in our area to seek to win people to the Lord.
I agreed to step into the leadership roll in the interim period and began identifying three main goals of our team.
First, to identify resources that our association may have that we have yet to put to use in the area of new work. The major find was identification of several young adults who were called to the ministry yet had not officially began the process of training for the Lord’s service. The ACPT met with the Leadership Development Team in order to pass this need to them which they have embraced wholeheartedly. Second, we saw the need of coordinating with the three different groups in our area who are working toward church planting. We identified that the North American Mission Board has a representative in Chatham that is seeking to plant a house church, we know that the IBSA has a passion to help start new work in our area through several staff members, and we have discovered a few churches that would like to begin new work in the association. We were in the process of coordinating these efforts when the ministry year came to a close.
Third, we need to support the church plants in our association. We are currently rallying around “Principe De Paz” the new Hispanic congregation meeting at Pasfield. Faithfully SubmittedMark Emerson Chairman
Church Health
The committee met three times this year. CCBA had four churches that took advantage of the Natural Church Development Survey that the Church Health team offered. These churches are using the information from the survey to develop their ministry plans and objectives.
The Church Health Team gave our pastors the opportunity to learn more about Church Renewal Journey, a NAMB emphasis. The Church Health team held one meeting with six pastors and a second meeting will be rescheduled for a later time. Church Renewal Journey is similar to Lay Renewal Ministry. Church Renewal Journey’s has five emphases. The first emphases is designed to build and deepen relationships within the church. The other four emphases provide a map for the church to begin the journey of becoming an Acts 1:8 church. To learn more, please do not hesitate to contact Milton or a member of the Church Health Team. Submitted by: Sylvan Knobloch, Team Leader
Leadership Development
The Leadership Development and Mentoring Team met January 31 to plan the April 29 Leadership Training Conference. The theme for this year was on Becoming Effective Leaders. The conference breakout groups addressed several topics from how to lead your church in a lay renewal journey (David Gray), how to do long-range planning collaboratively (Milton Bost and Sylvan Knobloch), tips from a doctor on how to visit the hospital (Dr. Gary Draper), how to know yourself and lead from your strengths (Mike Keppler) and a final group discussion on how to pray in public settings (Don Full). 37 attended the conference.
Some of the comments from the conference evaluation included: I see where this is beneficial to churches; I would spend a full day on this topic; good information; very enlightening – positive reinforcement of hands on experience; and very helpful and enjoyable – “Focus” Wow!
After evaluating the conference results while noting the lower attendance this year and discussing the need for another training paradigm, we have decided to go “in another direction” for the 2008-09 year. During the May 27 meeting, we heard a vision for training young men and women from our association churches. In the next year we hope to partner in this vision in a new program called The Timothy Project. The mission of this project is to “equip young men and women through a mentor-guided apprentice program to serve Christ through the churches and ministries of CCBA.”
In the July 7 meeting, we discussed implementation strategies for The Timothy Project. The first training meeting for new mentors was held on Saturday, September 7. A follow-up meeting including the prospective apprentices is scheduled for October 18. We have already identified about a dozen prospective apprentices and we are quite excited about this new opportunity to equip them through a “shaping and serving model” guided by experienced mentors.
